The European State of the Climate Report 2021
from the Copernicus Climate Change Service
Thursday May 5, 2022, 16:00-17:00 CEST
ECMWF is the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. It is both a research institute and a 24/7 operational service, producing global numerical weather predictions and other data for its Member and Co-operating States and the broader community. The Centre has one of the largest supercomputer facilities and meteorological data archives in the world. Other strategic activities include delivering advanced training and assisting the WMO in implementing its programmes.
ECMWF operates two services from the EU’s Copernicus Earth observation programme, the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) and the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). It also contributes to the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS).
The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service provides consistent and quality-controlled information related to air pollution and health, solar energy, greenhouse gases and climate forcing, everywhere in the world, while the Copernicus Climate Change Service provides authoritative information about the past, present and future climate. C3S also provides tools to enable climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies by policy makers and businesses. A flagship C3S
publication is the European State of the Climate Report, which is compiled from a range of data sources – from satellite to in-situ – with contributions from international experts in the field of climate science, including Copernicus partners and national meteorological bodies.
Join us our host Geoff Sawyer (EARSC Strategic Advisor and former Secretary General), with Richard Engelen (Deputy Director of Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), ECMWF) and Carlo Buontempo (Director of Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), ECMWF) to hear more about the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service and Copernicus Climate Change Service. What C3S’s flagship ESOTC publication has to say about the state of the climate in 2021 and the key role that EO plays in the monitoring of our planet’s atmosphere and changing climate. Questions which could be addressed during this EOcafe include the following:
• Key findings from the 2021 European State of the Climate Report.
• What is the process for creating the ESOTC?
• How does C3S data support monitoring of essential climate variables?
• What added value does EO bring to C3S climate and CAMS atmosphere data? • What innovations within the EO industry would help C3S and CAMS evolve? • What future services and products, that include EO, are C3S and CAMS planning for the future?
• How does ECMWF think the EO industry can play a stronger role?
• How do C3S and CAMS see their relations with the industry evolve? And will this evolution be based on the continuity of what has been achieved?
• What measures/actions could be implemented to support the EO downstream services industry sector within C3S and CAMS?
Registration: The webinar is open to ALL, but priority will be given to EARSC members. Registration is free but compulsory. Please click on the following link to register.
