DigitalGlobe Announces Agreement With Nokia For Use Of Imagery

DigitalGlobe and Nokia have agreed to bring the real-world perspective of high-resolution satellite and aerial imagery to Nokia Maps, both on mobile devices and on Ovi, improving the global driving, hiking and walking navigation capabilities for consumers who use these applications.

Through streamlined technology integration and development of a proprietary format for delivering imagery to Nokia, users will have quick, easy and seamless access to a wide range of global high-resolution imagery from DigitalGlobe’s comprehensive ImageLibrary sourced from its high-resolution satellite constellation and aerial network.

Available on compatible Nokia devices and online through Ovi, the enhanced navigation features enable consumers to find and explore a wealth of world destinations with turn-by-turn, street-by-street and city-to-city navigation views.

The integration of DigitalGlobe’s high-resolution world imagery content greatly increases the functionality of Nokia Maps, revealing more details than standard street level mapping views, and also providing peace-of-mind for precision and accuracy in off-road navigation – a feature of special interest to hikers and walkers.

Nokia Maps can be downloaded to a variety of Nokia devices, including the Nokia N96 or Nokia N95, or accessed online.

The demand for more detailed mobile imagery is expected to rise in tandem with consumers’ ever-increasing reliance on consumer technology with the expansion of mobile social interactions in today’s ever-more connected society.

“We chose DigitalGlobe as our world imagery content partner because of its high-quality imagery, comprehensive coverage, and technical experience in delivering mobile imagery solutions,” said Christof Hellmis, director, head of navigation context services platform, Nokia.

“Integrating even more of DigitalGlobe’s high-resolution imagery into Nokia Maps improves the visual context of our users’ global navigation experiences.”

DigitalGlobe, a leading global content provider of high-resolution world imagery solutions, is the imagery provider of choice for consumer navigation, Web portals and mobile mapping applications.

Its high-resolution commercial satellite constellation and aerial network is constantly refreshing the world’s largest library of high resolution, accurate world imagery at a rate of nearly one million square kilometers each day.

“Current, accurate world imagery will be a key driver of Internet mobility innovation. We are proud to work with Nokia to bring advanced imagery solutions to its consumer navigation applications and assist Nokia in their strategy for growing a connected society,” said Jill Smith, chief executive officer of DigitalGlobe.

“Nokia’s strategic approach to Internet mobility will provide true real-world perspective to consumers through more accessible world views, ultimately fueling greater confidence in and use of location-based services and applications.”
