On 20-21 October 2008, EU Environment Ministers met in Luxembourg under the French Presidency of the Council. Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas also attended this 2-day meeting on behalf of the European Commission.
Given that Kopernikus provides services supplying information on the environment, the Presidency of the Environment Council submitted an information note about the Kopernikus initiative. The objective of this note was to present to the Environment Ministers the purpose of Kopernikus, as well as its next stages. Moreover, the areas covered by the different Kopernikus services were also presented and explained.
This information note also underlined that a new Kopernikus service, providing information on climate parameter monitoring, should shortly be set up. This service is needed to ensure that decision-making in the environment field can rely on the best possible information. Finally, it was stated that a number of functions are already likely to be integrated into a Kopernikus climate service.
