Pemex Signs New 5-Year Radarsat Environmental Monitoring Contract With MDA

This contract ensures data continuity and integrity in support of environmental stewardship and exploration activities in PEPRMNE’s area of operations.

PEP has been using Radarsat-1 operationally since 2001 when it established its maritime surveillance strategy for the Campeche Basin. Image analysis experts are able to characterise oil on the sea surface by its origin – natural oil seep, oil spill from production facilities, or illegal dumping by ships. This information allows PEP to improve its environmental performance with regards to oil spill prevention and response, as well as to develop a deeper understanding of the behaviour of natural oil seeps in support of its exploration activities.

Miguel Herrera, Pemex project supervisor stated, “One of the key strengths of working with MDA and the Radarsat program is MDA’s ability to support near-real time delivery of data and information in the event of an oil spill.”

Mr. Herrera continued, “We are looking forward to the launch of Radarsat-2 which will provide advanced imaging capabilities and an enhanced ground segment. The latter translates into even faster programming and processing services in the event of an emergency.”

Pamela Welgan, MDA Sales Director for Latin America stated “Pemex is one of the early adopters of Radarsat imagery to be applied in an operational context for near-real time and systematic monitoring in the Gulf of Mexico. It is, indeed, a pleasure to carry on our technical collaboration with Pemex for another five years.”

About MDA

MDA provides advanced information solutions that capture and process vast amounts of data, produce essential information, and improve the decision making and operational performance of business and government organisations world-wide.

About MDA Geospatial Services Inc.

MDA’s Geospatial Services provides Earth observation data, information products and services from aerial platforms and the majority of commercially available radar and optical satellites. These products and services are used globally for resource mapping, environmental monitoring, offshore oil and gas exploration, ice reconnaissance, maritime surveillance and disaster management.

MDA holds the exclusive distribution rights to Canada’s Radarsat-1 and Radarsat-2 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites. MDA will commence operation of the Radarsat-2 satellite when launched in 2007. Radarsat-2 offers unparalleled imaging flexibility, dual polarisation and full polarimetric imaging options, high-resolution and a highly responsive programming and delivery ground segment.
