NERC to review ESA contributions

A consultation meeting to review achievements of NERC??s
investments into ESA??s environmental science programmes and future
requirements for EOEP-3.

The Natural
Environment Research Council is to hold a consultation meeting on 27
June in London to review its spending on the European Space Agency’s
environmental science programmes and future requirements for the Earth
Observation Envelope Programme.

The second tranche of EOEP will come to
an end in December 2007. ESA member states will take a decision
regarding their subscription for EOEP at the ESA ministerial meeting in
December.

The meeting is open to anyone who is interested in Earth observation and ESA??s environmental science programmes.

Background

Following the transfer of budget and
responsibility from the DTI in April 2003, NERC became responsible for
the UK??s subscription to the European Space Agency??s (ESA)
environmental sciences programmes, namely the Earth Observation
Envelope Programme (EOEP) and Envisat operations and data exploitation.
NERC also contributes in part to the UK??s contribution of ESA??s
mandatory general budget together with DTI and PPARC.

The second tranche of EOEP will come to
an end in December 2007. ESA member states will take a decision
regarding their subscription for EOEP-3 at the ESA Ministerial meeting
in December 2005. This calls for NERC to review its national and
international investments in Earth Observation to be able to make an
informed decision regarding ESA??s EOEP-3 subscription. As part of this
process NERC would like to invite the UK??s environmental sciences
community and other stakeholders to discuss and review the achievements
of EOEP-2 and Envisat and future requirements for EOEP-3 from a UK
perspective.
