The ‘Copernicus Goes Local – Implementing the Space Strategy for Europe’ event gathered more than 300 Earth Observation actors and industry representatives from across Europe at the European Parliament in Brussels. EARSC Secretariat and several members attended this launch ceremony.

EARSC has recently developed its Internationalisation Strategy and one of its objectives is to support our members by opening up new market opportunities. In other words, EARSC would like to help developing the market for the commercial products and services. This includes new commercial market sectors and new export possibilities linked to national needs in countries outside Europe.

The European Commission (EC) has launched an initiative to develop Copernicus Data and Information Access Services (DIAS) that facilitate access to Copernicus data and information from the Copernicus services. By providing data and information access alongside processing resources, tools and other relevant data, this initiative is expected to boost user uptake, stimulate innovation and the creation of new business models based on Earth Observation data and information.

A New Phase for the Copernicus Global Land Service: more variables, more products, and finer resolution

The Copernicus Global Land Service (CGLS) is one of the components of the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service. Since 2013 it has been providing bio-geophysical variables on the status and evolution of land surface in near real time. In the late 2016, the CGLS entered an exciting second operational phase with even more to offer to its existing and potential users.

The South African National Space Agency has developed a system to monitor crops

The Earth Observation (EO) Directorate of the South African National Space Agency (Sansa) has developed an advanced crop-monitoring system for South Africa that will also be made available to other African countries, in due course. “We are able to monitor their [the crops’] condition through time,” Sansa EO acting MD Dr Paida Mangara told the thirty-seventh International Symposium on Remote Sensing of the Environment (ISRSE) in Pretoria.
