In previous EOcafe we have learned about two projects looking to link the rapidly developing technology of Artificial Intelligence with that of Earth Observation. The AI4EO and AI4Copernicus projects are setting challenges for diverse applications, with AI playing an increasingly important role in the processing and especially the analysis of EO data streams. Given the volume of data and the challenge to extract information, AI appears the perfect fit to ease the task and to deliver new, exciting products and services.
But, recently, new AI tools have emerged. ChatGPT, BARD, and Galactica are three prominent examples among many based on large language models (LLM) which respond to a free text question by generating text – which may also be computer code – that is often indistinguishable from that written by a human. Indeed, it is probably better than many humans can write. This will change many businesses radically and, already we see the tech giants scrambling to position themselves.
But, is this all good? As these LLM-based tools have become public and available for widespread use, awareness has arisen of their potential to disrupt society in both positive and negative ways and there are even calls to pause further developments whilst society at large takes stock of what is being created.
However, now the genie is out of the bottle, what are the implications for the EO services sector? These machines can generate code far faster and possibly more accurately than any human software engineer. But are the answers it gives, correct? What are the legal implications if the code is flawed? How to distinguish between tested code and that generated by a “chatbot”? What about IPR? If the “chatbot” produces code that is identical to that used by a company, is this a legal infringement?
To address these questions and many more, we shall be joined by two experts from the EC Joint Research Centre who are ready to share their ideas and experience in this regard. Blagoj Delipetrev, an expert on AI and Machine Learning (Scientific project officer in Artificial Intelligence, Joint Research Centre, European Commission), and Jiri Hradec, analyst on policy, data, and text mining (Policy Officer for policy, data and text mining, Joint Research Centre, European Commission) will discuss with our host Geoff Sawyer (EARSC Strategic Advisor and former Secretary General).
