Mining Company PlanetGeoScan Namibia and explorer GeoScan GmbH sign MoU for critical battery minerals in Namiba

Windhoek, Namibia, 5.Dec. 2022: At the state-visit of German Vice-Chancellor and Minister for Economy and Climate, Dr. Robert Habeck, PlanetGeoScan Namibia Pty LLC, Namibia, and GeoScan GmbH, Germany, signed a Memorandum of Understanding for finding, mining and processing lithium and other critical battery minerals in Namibia (Picture). Meetings earlier today involved President Dr. Hage G. Geingob and Minister of Mines and Energy Tom Alweendo and preparation by Deputy Minister of Mines and Energy, Kornelia Shilunga, 

PlanetGeoScan Namibia CEO Elton Katangolo said: “This cooperation may be the breakthrough to establish Namibia as a world-class supplier of Lithium” while GeoScan CEO Oliver Haeggberg remarked that “Among all our projects in Africa, this can be a game changer for both countries.” 

To fight climate-change and help the world electrify, batteries are a main factor. Battery minerals such as Lithium, Manganese, Copper, Nickel or Cobalt are of critical importance. They need to come from responsible, sustainable and reliable sources. 

Namibia is known as a mineral-rich country, yet large parts of the country are not explored with modern methods and thus much of its mineral wealth may yet be unknown. These areas are too large to explore with conventional methods due to the high cost, long duration and environmental damage of methods such as wide drilling campaigns or large-scale seismic studies. 

GeoScan GmbH of Berlin, Germany, has developed, deployed and is successfully using a method for fully Sustainable Exploration with no CO2 footprint and zero impact on environment or wildlife. GeoScan’s method is particularly well suited for exploring large areas quickly and at low cost 

PlanetGeoScan Namibia already holds 23 lithium licenses through a sister company and wants to acquire many more to form a large lithium presence. Together with local and international partners

Namibia intends to use GeoScan to explore and then themselves mine and process Namibian resources of battery minerals. 

It is envisaged, that ultimately the value chain from exploration through to refining is established within Namibia, reducing the energy need for transportation of raw materials saving CO2 emissions, creating employment and income for the country and delivering security of supply for Germany.

PlanetGeoScan is a joint venture between Swiss and Namibian companies specializing in establishing mines of Lithium and other battery-minerals in Namibia. It currently holds 23 license areas through a sister company and is in the process of acquiring further Exclusive Prospecting Licenses (EPLs) for lithium. Working with GeoScan will focus these efforts and avoid failed efforts. 

With established mining activity PlanetGeoScan Namibia intends to set up a processing factory for the ore (mainly pegmatite and spodumene) to battery-grade lithium in Namibia. This way much more of the value chain takes place within Namibian creating employment and wealth and reducing dependence from other players.
