ECMWF & Code for Earth
Unlocking the potential of EO & Earth system modelling through innovation & collaboration

ECMWF is the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. It is both a research institute and a 24/7 operational service, producing global numerical weather predictions and other data for its Member and Co-operating States and the broader community. The Centre has one of the largest supercomputer facilities and meteorological data archives in the world. Other strategic activities include delivering advanced training and assisting the WMO in implementing its programmes.
ECMWF operates two Copernicus services: Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) and the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) and contributes to the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS). Additionally ECMWF is entrusted alongside ESA and EUMETSAT by the European Union to create a digital twin under the Destination Earth (DestinE) initiative.
Several of these activities are based on inputs from the EO industry and also feed them as downstream users for further developments.
Code for Earth is an ECMWF key action fostering innovation, collaboration and open-source developments. The inclusive programme drives Earth science innovation, while supporting cutting-edge developments to fulfill specific needs in data analysis, data management, visualisation, software development or services across ECMWF activities. Code for Earth is supported by Copernicus and DestinE.
Code for Earth is a challenge open to individuals and companies alike. The challenge will be launched very soon with a number of opportunities to participate and to win! It comes on top of other opportunities to work with ECMWF.
Join us our host Geoff Sawyer (EARSC Strategic Advisor and former Secretary General), with Stijn Vermoote (Head of User Outreach and Engagement, ECMWF) and Athina Trakas (Lead of Code for Earth, ECMWF) to hear more about ECMWF, its activities and the Code for Earth challenge.
Questions which could be addressed during this EOcafe include the following:
- Which role does Earth Observation play in ECMWF’s activities?
- How does ECMWF think the EO industry can play a closer role?
- What is the Code for Earth challenge? Where have previous challenges focused?
- How can I participate in the Code for Earth challenge?
