Open community letter for the full consideration of Earth Observation in the EU Forest Monitoring Law

The European Union is leading global efforts to tackle biodiversity loss, climate change, and ecosystem degradation. The proposed Monitoring Framework for Resilient European Forests aims to establish a comprehensive, science-based system to track the health, sustainability, and resilience of forests throughout Europe. The European Association of Remote Sensing Companies has been closely monitoring this proposal and supports the open letter from the Earth Observation (EO) research community, which highlights the importance of EO in creating a sustainable future for European forests.

Accurately representing existing and emerging technologies is crucial for ensuring that the legislation is effective, implementable, and aligned with the EU’s strategic objectives. We encourage ongoing dialogue and a review of current capabilities to ensure that the final text reflects the latest advancements and best practices in the field.
