Copernicus is the European Union’s flagship programme for monitoring Earth’s environment using satellite and in-situ observations. With 16 TB1 of data per day being received, Copernicus is the number one world provider of space data and information. As such, it is a key enabler of the European digital transition and, by enabling big data analytics in many areas of application, it is contributing to the development of innovative services/products. Copernicus data is also a reliable tool contributing to achieve the European Green Deal’s objectives.
In the context of the European twin transition, the continuation and modernisation of Copernicus will help to answer “evolving needs towards more green, more digital and more reactive”2. During his speech at the 14th EU Space Conference3, Commissioner Thierry Breton acknowledged the success of the Copernicus programme and voiced a strong message about the necessity to consolidate and modernise the programme in 2022 and the upcoming years.
A favourable context is already in place to make sure that Copernicus can deliver and respond to future challenges. A 14.88 billion euros EU Space Programme was adopted in April 2021 in order to boost EU Space leadership beyond 2020. An envelope of 5.421 billion euros was allocated to Copernicus for the 2021-2027 period to accelerate the modernisation of both Copernicus infrastructure and services to ensure the world-class role of EU in Earth Observation. The development of the current suite of Sentinel missions with the six “high priority candidate missions” will also help address challenges such as urbanisation, food security, natural disasters and climate change.
