EOcafe: Earth Observation & the Raw Materials Sector

Earth Observation & the Raw Materials Sector

Challenges and Solutions

Thursday 18th February 2021, 16:00-16:45 CET

Mining takes place across the globe, often in very remote locations, dispersed amongst countries of differing degrees of wealth. Companies operating those mines are facing multiple challenges throughout all lifecycle stages from the exploration phase, environmental assessment & permitting to design, operations, mine closure and aftercare.

Information derived from Earth Observation satellites can provide a continuous flow of information for the monitoring and management of subsidence, geology, biology, ecology, socio-economic development, resource availability and much more. It can also provide data about very remote and inaccessible areas.

The ESA Best Practice Earth Observation for the Mining of Raw Materials (EO4RM) project brought together experts from both the Mining and the Earth Observation sector to identify key challenges of the mining sector and suitable solutions drawing from modern and future Earth Observation capabilities.

The EOcafe will highlight the current state of play of EO in the mining sector and how EO and the sector can work together already now and in the future with new capabilities and technologies.

In this EOcafe we will discuss all together the following:

  • What is the current status and role of EO in the mining and raw materials sector?
  • What are the challenges and trends of the raw materials sector?
  • What are the challenges and barriers for EO companies to enter the market and integrate solutions into the specific business processes? What is the added value to the raw materials sector?
  • Are there any successful EO applications already deployed?
  • What measures/actions could be implemented to support the EO downstream services industry sector in the raw materials sector?

Our host Geoff SAWYER, EARSC’s Strategic Advisor and former Secretary General will exchange with three special guests:

  • Margreet VAN MARLE, Researcher/Consultant Wildfires and Climate Resilience, Deltares
  • Reinier OOST, Product Lead, Sensar
  • Brendan MORRIS, Managing Director, LTMS (Lisheen Technical & Mining Services)

Registration: This webinar is open to ALL but priority will be given to EARSC members. Registration is free but compulsory. Please click on the following link to register by the 18th February at 11:00 (CET).
