Cyprus looks to space for defense purposes

(06 Sept 2014) The Ministry of Defence has begun a study on the use and exploitation of the benefits arising from space technologies and geographic information systems for security and national defense purposes.

Minister of Defence Christoforos Fokaides said Friday that the Ministry is ready to cooperate with academic institutions, research centres and the private sector in the area of earth observation with applications in defense and security.

Addressing an event organised Friday in Nicosia on Earth Observation, the Minister said that the government of Cyprus is making efforts to enhance its participation in the European Space Organisation, in the fields of security, search and rescue, environment monitoring, earth observation, satelite navigation and telecommunications.

Cyprus`s accession to ESA as a full member state will constitute an important milestone, as regards strategy, security, policy, research and technology issues and will boost Cyprus` competitiveness, he pointed out. — (KYPE)
