Welcome to the Earth Observation Advisory Group Application homepage where new calls for group membership will be announced. This website allows scientists from the Earth Observation community to register and apply for membership of an Earth Explorer or Sentinel Mission Advisory Group. Applicants for all calls must be of the nationality of one of the ESA Member-States* or Canada.
Explorer Mission Advisory Groups: As part of ESA’s Living Planet Programme, the Earth Explorer missions encompass a new strategy for observing the Earth from space where missions are designed to address critical and specific issues that have been raised by the science community whilst demonstrating breakthrough technology in observing techniques. In general, the role of the Mission Advisory Group is to provide advice to the Agency on the detailed scientific objectives of a mission, data product definitions, instrument design and calibration, data validation and data exploitation. As a mission progresses though each phase of development and implementation the emphasis of the role of the Advisory Group will vary accordingly.
Sentinel Mission Advisory Groups: As part of the EC/ESA Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) programme, ESA is responsible for coordinating the GMES Space Component and for the development of specific space infrastructure to meet the user needs. User requirements for the GMES Sentinel missions are the responsibility of the European Commission, or its mandated body for the service component of GMES. Meanwhile ESA develops and elaborates Mission Requirements Documentation as the baseline for each of the Sentinel missions. The baseline is endorsed by the EC such that ultimately each mission will deliver products that meet the user requirements. In general, the role of the Mission Advisory Group is to provide technical advice to the Agency during development and implementation of the mission. In this capacity members are requested to advise on: the compatibility between detailed objectives of a mission and the system specifications, priorities amongst observational requirements, retrieval algorithms and retrieval performance, product specifications, calibration and validation, and operational requirements. As a mission progresses through each phase of development and implementation, the emphasis of the role of the Advisory Group, and its membership terms, will be adjusted accordingly.
