(15Sept 2015, directionsmag.com) In this interview, Barbara Ryan, the Secretariat Director of the intergovernmental Group on Earth Observations (GEO) in Geneva, Switzerland. discusses the expansive mission of GEO with editor in chief Joe Francica. GEO provides information about earth science and technology for policy makers worldwide. GEO’s Members include 92 Governments and the European Commission plus 67 intergovernmental agencies are. Projects range from the Asian Water cycle initiatives to Global Drought Early Warning to Biomass monitoring. After graduating from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Cortland with a degree in geology in 1974, Ms. Ryan joined the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and eventually became the associate director for geography at the USGS, responsible for the agency’s remote sensing, geography and civilian mapping programmes, including the Landsat satellites.
