Geological knowledge

NPA are particularly noted for expertise in geological and oceanographic studies for hydrocarbon exploration. NPA are a market-leader in space-based natural oil seep detection, having pioneered the technique of Offshore Basin Screening and developed a Global database containing results from more than 5000 SAR scenes. As one of Europe??s largest users of satellite radar data (ERS-1/2, ENVISAT and RADARSAT), NPA are recognised as an established authority on the systems and processes enabling high-volume, custom SAR processing.

SAR Interferometry techniques

With growing involvement in disaster and risk management, NPA are at the forefront in the application of satellite SAR interferometry (InSAR) for ground displacement and subsidence detection. NPA currently project manage one of ESA’s GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) projects, Terrafirm. Terrafirma is a project aiming to establish a pan-European ground motion hazard information service in support of policies aimed at saving lives, improving safety and reducing economic loss. The project utilises PSI (Persistent Scatterer Interferometry), a state-of-the-art technique which has the power to detect millimetric ground motion phenomena from space.
